NYSVA's NY Minute: NYSVA Joins SFATA, Strengthening Interests of Members

 | Published on 6/29/2018
Gregory Conley of the American Vaping Association today posted on his Facebook page of the news that NYSVA has joined SFATA: "Very excited to see the New York State Vapor Association join up with SFATA as an affiliated independent group.

New York is a notoriously tough state to fight in, but NYSVA has done a remarkable job at engagement, education, and building relationships with lawmakers in the New York Assembly and Senate.

Several years ago, I traveled to upstate New York to speak to a group of New York business owners about the importance of forming and funding a state-level group. I have been providing my guidance and advice to the NYSVA ever since. I look forward to continuing to help through my work with SFATA."

June 29, 2018, West Chazy, NY The New York State Vapor Association (NYSVA), a trade association representing vapor product businesses across the state of New York, is proud to announce that it has joined the national trade organization, the Smoke-Free Alternatives Trade Association (SFATA), as an Affiliated Independent Group (AIG). This mutually beneficial alliance will strengthen the voice of New York vapor shop owners and the independent manufacturers and distributors that supply them.

In just the first half of 2018, the NYSVA has won a number of victories for the vapor industry in New York, including stopping an onerous per-milliliter tax on e-liquid, a 75% wholesale tax on vapor products, a total ban on the sale of flavored e-liquid, and a statewide Tobacco 21 bill. Opponents of the vapor industry are numerous and well-funded, but the stories of small business owners and their customers gathered by NYSVA have enabled the organization to stop over twenty additional bills from coming up for a vote in the same six-month period.

The NYSVA board has gained respect in Albany, New York’s legislative capitol, by presenting the strength of the vapor store market in the state, by personally attending meetings with their lobbyist, Christina Dickinson of Dickinson & Avella, PLLC, and by distinguishing themselves as completely independent of tobacco interests.

“Without continued efforts, we believe the era of the vape shop -- the place where smokers can learn, try, and receive support for switching to vapor products will be over,“ said NYSVA President, Michael Frennier. "SFATA has the same mission as the NYSVA, which is to protect the interests of vapor shop owners, their employees' jobs, the companies that sell into them, and their customers that depend on vapor products to keep them from smoking. There have been significant positive accomplishments under the new leadership of SFATA. We are very appreciative of the help they provided in New York, and we look forward to mutual collaboration to protect our members' interests on state and federal levels."

SFATA Executive Director, Mark Anton, shared his enthusiastic response to the news.  “We are proud to partner with The New York State Vapor Association. Combining a mature state organization like the NYSVA with the recognition of SFATA will strengthen our messaging beyond the borders of New York. We are stronger when we work together.  By collaborating our efforts and working with our state chapters and AIGs, we strengthen our presence everywhere.  SFATA is committed to supporting our state chapters and affiliates and relies on them to support our federal initiatives in kind.  The working relationship between NYSVA and SFATA has gone on for some time now, so we are thrilled to see it grow into an official partnership.”

NYSVA is the second Affiliated Independent Group the Smoke-Free Alternatives Trade Association has announced, and the third addition to its state program, since new leadership took over just two short months ago on May 1, 2018.  For more information on how you can join SFATA, please contact SFATA’s Director of State Chapter Affairs at
